Parliamentary Select Committee publishes meat contamination report following horse meat scandal

‘The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs parliamentary select committee has published its final report on the horse meat contamination incident. The Association of Public Analysts welcomes the report which calls on the government to ensure sufficient numbers of public analysts and laboratories to enable the UK to respond to food scares such as the horse meat scandal.

Edinburgh APA Laboratory introduces fast Legionella DNA water testing

Edinburgh Scientific Services have extensive experience of delivering an effective and value added Legionella testing service to its customers. This has recently been extended with the introduction a new UKAS accredited DNA method. Testing can be done the same day in emergencies with a typical turnaround of 48 hours. This dramatically improves the response time from the current 10 day testing regime.

Bumble bee study does not affect neonicotinoid conclusions, EFSA says

EFSA has identified several weaknesses in a study, published by the UK Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA), which suggested that neonicotinoid pesticides do not have a major effect on bumble bee colonies under field conditions. Given these weaknesses, the Authority considers that the study does not affect the conclusions reached by EFSA regarding risks for bees related to the use of the neonicotinoid pesticides thiamethoxam, clothianidin and imidacloprid, published in January 2013.

UK researchers develop control material to improve GM rice testing

A team of researchers from the UK's Government Chemist Programme, in LGC, have developed a new control material to help laboratories identify false positives when monitoring imports for genetically modified (GM) rice in food products originating from China. The report on the control material has been published in a paper in the Journal of the Association of Public Analysts (JAPA).
