Senior Counsel from Gough Square Chambers put the food experts through their paces in the witness box in a seminar on court technique for the Expert Witness. Organised by Michael Walker from the Government Chemist Programme in LGC the event took place in the imposing surroundings of the library at RSC Burlington House on 14 February 2014.

  • APA Laboratory finds dangerous levels of phthalates in childrens toys

    11 February 2014

    Testing undertaken by APA member laboratory Minton Treharne & Davies, on behalf of Leicestershire County Council Trading Standards, found the presence of phthalates in children’s toys at levels higher than the maximum prescribed limit. An article in the Leicester Mercury reports on the trader being prosecuted and fined a total of £16,500 in relation to two toys.

  • Fake-food scandal revealed as tests show third of products mislabelled

    The Guardian - Saturday 8th February 2014 An article in Saturday’s Guardian highlights the problems shown up by routine sampling and analysis in West Yorkshire. Problems range from high levels of salt in sausages and the use of non-approved health claims to counterfeit vodka and beef sold as lamb. Duncan Campbell, Hon Secretary of the Association, said “;"We are routinely finding problems with more than a third of samples, which is disturbing at a time when the budget for food standards inspection and analysis is being cut."

    Liz Moran, APA President, has been recognised for the important work she has done throughout the last year in championing consumer protection, particularly in the light of the horse meat scandal. Liz has been one of the leading scientists in the fight against food fraud during the horse meat scandal and has been involved in many discussions with government officials and the media, and has contributed to the publication of major government reports on enforcement of food standards in the last year.
