Successful week long" Analysis & Examination of Food" course held at Reading

Another successful week long course run by the APA Educational Trust was held at Reading in April / May 2014 and attracted 9 registered delegates, of whom 8 attended, 7 for the whole week and 1 for specific days. All of the delegates were from UK Public Analyst Laboratories, both private and public sector. The teaching consisted of a mix of lectures; laboratory practical sessions and interactive exercises.

LGC Guidance Videos on Food Allergy and the catering sector

Food allergy is an IgE mediated adverse reaction to food proteins. In the UK about 1-2% of adults and 5-8% of children are reported to have a diagnosed food allergy. Many more worry about allergy and food intolerance and the prevalence appears to be increasing. Allergen recalls cost the food industry £millions across the UK and in 2014 all caterers will be obliged by law to give allergen information.

Local authorities to test for lamb meat substitution

Following the publication of an investigation by Which?, the Food Standards Agency has announced an additional programme of priority testing of lamb dishes from takeaway restaurants across the UK following evidence of ongoing substitution of lamb for cheaper meats such as beef and chicken.
