Public Analyst Labs Named as Centres of Expertise for Food Authenticity Testing

Following the Elliott review in 2013-14, the UK Government committed to setting up a Virtual Food Authenticity Network to help bring those involved in food authenticity testing together in a more coordinated way. 13 UK Centres of Expertise have been identified and listed on the Food Authenticity Network website

Death of Wilf Cassidy MBE

It is with sadness that the Association announces that Wilf Cassidy MBE died on 13th December. Wilf was Scientific Advisor and County Analyst in Somerset and President of the Association 1985-87.

Hazardous batteries prosecution
25 November 2015
Testing undertaken by Minton Treharne & Davies, on behalf of the City and County of Swansea Trading Standards, found the harmful batteries on sale in a number of outlets of a major discount store chain. The BBC Wales consumers affair program ‘X-ray’ filmed a piece with Alastair Low (Public Analyst at MTD) to be shown in an article they are airing in 30th November. This should be available on the BBC i-player as well.

APA Factory Visit to Fuller’s Brewery

As part of the APA Annual Conference 17 delegates enjoyed an entertaining and informative tour of Fuller’s brewery in Chiswick, West London on 22 October 2015. The visit was supported by the APA Educational Trust which views factory visits as extremely beneficial to those studying for MChemA and for practising Public Analysts to foster a better awareness of food production.

Newly Elected APA President Attends Reception at the House of Commons

Newly elected APA President Jon Griffin recently attended a reception at the house of Commons on behalf of the APA. It was hosted by Richard Benyon MP and Huw Irranca-Davies MP and delegates from a number of groups attended. These included representatives from the FSA, DEFRA, DoH, The National Farmers Union, The Anaphylaxis Society, The UK Pig Breeders Association and The Institute of Trading Standards to name but a few.

PA lab finds egg in rice dish claimed to be egg free

A Chinese takeaway in Llandybie has been prosecuted by Carmarthenshire County Council for a food safety offence. The case against Ahmed Cuisine Ltd was heard at Carmarthen Magistrates Court when the director entered a guilty plea on behalf of the company to an offence contrary to s.14 of the Food Safety Act 1990.
