  • Another successful week long "Analysis & Examination of Food"course held at Reading

    Another successful week-long fully residential postgraduate course was held at the University of Reading in April 2015 and attracted 13 registered delegates. The delegates were from UK Public Analyst Laboratories, both private and public sector, and one was from the Food Standards Agency, the main sponsor of the event. The teaching consisted of a mix of lectures; laboratory practical sessions and interactive exercises.

  • Retirement of Jane McLauchlin

    The APA marked the retirement of Jane McLauchlin with a presentation at the RSC at the end of March. Jane administered the Mastership in Chemical Analysis (MChemA) qualification for the Royal Society of Chemistry for the last thirteen years.

  • Environmental Contaminants Webinar (28th-30th April)

    A series of webinars is planned for 28th & 30th April, 2015 on Environmental Contaminants. This online eSeminar focuses on the analysis of environmental contaminants and takes place in four 2 hr sessions, one each on 28 & 30 April.   • DNA Sequencing Uncovers Fish Fraud

    Former Royal Navy chef Michael Redhead, was jailed for six months by a crown court judge and his company Michael Redhead Associates was fined £50,000, in a £1.1m food fraud that saw almost 400,000 packs of ‘fake’ sea bass sold in 600 Iceland outlets across the country. The fraud was uncovered by Hull City Council Trading Standards who submitted samples of fish to Public Analyst Scientific Services in Hull for species testing. The fish was tested by DNA sequencing and found to be Japanese sea bass, a form of perch, and not Atlantic sea bass.

    Alastair Low, Public Analyst, of Minton Treharne & Davies (MTD) has been filmed by BBC Wales for the Welsh Panorama style program ‘Week In Week Out’ following some testing MTD had undertaken for the BBC to determine the nitrogen/protein content of body building supplements. One was found to be exceptionally low (incredibly one fortieth the declared amount). The program is due to be aired on Tuesday 3rd March 22:40 BBC1 Wales, but will also be available on the BBC i-player. The program is looking into supplements (body building), their effect and also is the consumer getting what they expect. Filming took place at MTD’s Cross Hands lab of a piece showing some of the testing in addition to interview of Alastair.
