Aberdeen APA lab finds histamine in canned anchovies

Following work carried out by Aberdeen Scientific Services Laboratory on behalf of the Environmental Health Directorate of Malta, there has been a recall of tins of Princes brand anchovies in that country bearing the lot codes L-C089 and L-C036.

Local Authority Food Law Enforcement - “Overall Position is one of Growing Concern”.

The FSA Board received the annual report on local authority food law enforcement at its January meeting. Amongst other things the Board was asked to note concerns raised about the performance of some individual local authorities, the sustainability of the current enforcement delivery model and whether the model is fit for the future. The issues raised in the report are more pronounced in relation to England and for food standards activity.

Another Prosecution for the use of Rhodamine B in Food

Javid Iqbal the owner of La Jawab, a Luton based business was found guilty of an offence under Regulation 3 of the Food Additives, Flavourings, Enzymes and Extraction Solvents (England) Regulations 2013 by placing food on the market containing Rhodamine B, an unauthorised additive. Iqbal was fined £3,000, ordered to pay £2,200 prosecution costs and to pay £100 victim surcharge at Leeds Magistrates court on 15th December 2015.

Turkey is still the first choice for many on Christmas Day. As with other foods there is a huge amount of choice in terms of quality and most of the big retailers offer both fresh and frozen birds. There can be a big price difference between fresh and frozen, particularly at this time of year. Some of us order one for collection from independent butchers who source locally. But how do we know if our purchase if fresh and not a turkey that has been frozen for months then allowed to defrost prior to sale?
