Minton Treharne & Davies Ltd Public Analyst involved in second Swansea Trading Standards prosecution

The certificate of a Public Analyst at the Minton Treharne & Davies Ltd laboratory (MTD) has been involved in a Swansea Trading Standards prosecution of another large restaurant chain. Earlier in the year it was highlighted that MTD had reported against meat being presented as lobster in the Italian style restaurant chain "Ask" which was in fact artificially flavoured fish, formed to look like lobster meat. Now, an assessment of a product being used taken with the menu presentation to diners in the form of a certificate, has played an important role in a member of the Miller & Carter steakhouse chain being fined £60,000 for selling lobster dishes in Swansea that contained white fish.

Glasgow Scientific Services win prestigious Covid-19 Response award at Scottish Public Sector Awards Ceremony

Glasgow Scientific Services have won a prestigious Covid-19 Response Award at Scottish Public Sector Awards. The virtual ceremony took place on the 16th December The award was in recognition of the outstanding public health contribution by GSS manufacturing and distributing laboratory grade hand sanitiser products for front-line council and health and social care staff throughout the pandemic. The Scottish Public Service Awards celebrate the daily contribution made to Scotland's civic society from within the civil service, Scottish Government, Scottish Parliament, local government, health and social care sector and the broader public sector.

APA Lab helps expose bleach being sold as a "cure" for Coronavirus

Analysis by the Public Analyst at Kent Scientific Services found that a Coronavirus "cure" being marketed by vendors in the UK contained potentially dangerous levels of chemicals that could cause adverse health effects. The products were described as MMS (Miracle Mineral Solutions) and it was claimed that a drop of each could be put into food to cure various illnesses including Covid. One combination was around 20% Sodium Chlorite and 50% Citric Acid and the other was 20% Sodium Chlorite and 4% Hydrochloric Acid.

Glasgow PA Laboratory Producing Hand Sanitiser For Front Line Workers

International spirits firm Edrington who produce some of the best-known single malt Scotch Whiskies, including The Macallan, Highland Park, The Glenrothes as well asThe Famous Grouse has donated high strength alcohol to Glasgow City Council to allow it to produce hand sanitiser for front line workers during the current Covid-19 crisis. Their initial donation will allow around more than 1000 litres of sanitiser to be developed, with more to be supplied in the future to keep up with demand. The sanitiser will be produced by a team of chemical analysts within Glasgow City Council's Scientific Services and will be provided to council workers like care home staff and refuse collectors, as they deliver essential services across the city.
