  • Donkey snack contaminated by fox meat

Walmart admitted it found traces of DNA from other animals after testing
its donkey meat, which food regulators in the eastern province of
    Shandong said contained fox.

The supermarket, which has 359 outlets in China and plans to open
another 110 stores in the coming years, said it will help the Shandong
food regulator investigate its Chinese supplier, and tighten up its food
safety rules. It said the person in charge at the supplier factory has
    already been detained.

“We are deeply sorry for this whole affair,” said WalMart’s China boss,
Greg Foran. “It is a deep lesson that we need to continue to increase
    investment in supplier management.”

Food safety issues are an explosive topic in China, where poor supply
chain management has frequently led to scares in products ranging from
    baby milk to cooking oil.

Fox meat consumption is not commonplace in any country, but it is
considered edible and is even sold in at least one British butcher. JM
Danslow butcher in Gravesend, Kent, says fox, which is sold as a lean
alternative to common meats, is popular with its customers.
