Egyptian Visit to PA Laboratory

Kent Scientific Services recently played host to a visit by Dr Manal Atwa, Head of the government Food Additives Laboratory in Giza, Egypt, together with one of her colleagues and four members of the UK Food Standards Agency.

They were here to learn about the analysis of foods for both additives and contaminants. Additives of interest included colours, sweeteners and preservatives. The contaminants of concern included mycotoxins (aflatoxins, ochratoxin, DON, ZON etc) heavy metals and histamine.

They were given two presentations by members of staff, then toured the laboratory and spoke to the analysts concerned. They asked a number of relevant questions, and were given copies of the accredited methods used in the laboratory to determine additives and contaminants.

It is anticipated that further training visits for staff members will be arranged.
