New Lab for Dundee's forensic food scientists
The public analyst service in the north-east of Scotland has taken a leap forward, with the opening of a new, purpose-built laboratory in Dundee.
The laboratory, which was opened formally on Monday 12 November by the renowned microbiologist, Professor Hugh Pennington, has been funded by Dundee City Council and its partner authorities Angus and Perth & Kinross. It is located close to the university's burgeoning life sciences campus.
Jane Couper, who heads the PA service in Dundee, commented:
"Quite apart from the vastly improved working environment the new lab provides, it is evidence of the Council's commitment to allowing us to continue to monitor the safety and standard, of the public's food throughout Tayside, helping to prosecute those who break the law.".
The President of the Association of Public Analysts, Durham-based Alan Richards, said:
"These splendid new facilities will make a major contribution to helping to improve the analytical services provided by Jane and her colleagues here in Dundee." "Against the UK-wide backdrop of sustained lab closures and serious shortages of qualified public analysts, the new lab in Dundee stands as a beacon of hope for the future and provides a much-needed boost to the profession.",
he concluded.
