Association of Public Analysts Annual Conference
Royal Station Hotel, Newcastle

 Members of the Association were joined at their conference by delegates from the Food Standards Agency, Laboratory of the Government Chemist, SALSA and Central Scientific Laboratories.
The theme of the first day was “Chocolate and Wine” with presentations on the history of chocolate manufacture and modern methods of analysis followed by an overview of wine production in the UK provided by an inspector from the Wine Standards Branch of FSA. The day concluded with a wine tasting (which was enjoyed by all).
 The second day of conference focussed on methods of detecting food adulteration, microbiological examination of food and food enforcement issues within the UK. Presentations were made on:
- DNA analysis
- Honey analysis
- Microbiological Examination of food and the role of the Food Examiner
- Food Authenticity Issues
- Approval Scheme for Local and Regional Food Companies
- National Reference Laboratories
- LGC Referee Samples
- Issues relating to Melamine Contamination of Food
- Food Surveillance System

  The Conference was concluded by the Annual Dinner of the Association in the evening when presentations were made to two Associates, Jennifer Green and Paul Hancock, who had successfully achieved the award of Mastership of Chemical Analysis, the statutory qualification required to be appointed as a Public Analyst. Presentation were also made to the Honorary Treasurer and the Honorary Information Officer of Association who were both stepping down from their posts
The dinner concluded on a lighter note with a magic show.
