Legislation in Force

Three annual reviews of legislation (both UK and EU) covering the periods 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2007/08 have been posted on the Government Chemist website In general the themes dealt with include:

  • Food Safety – including, for example, contaminants and additives
  • Consumer Choice and Prevention of Fraud – including composition and general labelling
  • Health and Nutrition – including nutrition labelling, nutrients and supplements
  • Regulation – dealing with regulatory activities, and
  • Feed and fertilisers.

The reviews will be of interest to those studying for the Mastership in Chemical Analysis, as a rapid overview when reporting and/or interpreting results or for a general update on legislation in force and emerging issues. The material can be found at:

Recommended reading list for food additives: Dr Stephen Johnson of FSA has provided a reading list for those wishing to learn more about food additives. This is provided primarily as a follow-up to the lecture on the subject in the April 2007 Reading Training course
