Membership Categories of the Association of Public Analysts
Membership of the Association is aimed at any person performing a scientific role within an Official Food and Agricultural Control Laboratory as their work place around the world, not just UK (Public Analyst laboratories) and other EC laboratories. However, persons from other laboratories are welcome to join the Association as detailed below.
Members (MAPA)
Persons who are a minimum of twenty-five years of age and hold either:
- an appointment as Public Analyst or Deputy Public Analyst, or
- an appointment as Official Agricultural Analyst or Deputy Official Agricultural Analyst, together with a professional qualification which in the opinion of the Council is equivalent to that required to be appointed as a Public Analyst, or
- in the case of a person employed outside Great Britain and Northern Ireland, an appointment and professional qualification(s) which in the opinion of the Council are equivalent to those of a Public Analyst.
If for any reason, with the exception of retiring, a Member ceases to be so appointed then at the expiration of one month thereafter they shall cease to be a Member of the Association and cease to be entitled to use the designation Member of the Association. However, they may then become an Associate or Affiliate of the Association if desired (provided they meet the necessary requirements).
Every application for membership shall be considered by the Council who shall have power to accept or reject any application.

Associate Members (AMAPA)
Persons who are employed in a scientific capacity whether they be qualified (MChemA) or not in the laboratories of any of the classes of persons mentioned in (1) to (3) above.
If for any reason whatsoever an Associate ceases to be so employed, then at the expiration of one month thereafter they shall cease to be an Associate Member of the Association and cease to be entitled to use the designation Associate Member of the Association. However, they may then become an Affiliate of the Association if desired (provided they meet the necessary requirements)
Every candidate for Associate must be nominated by a Member and certified by them to be a fit and proper person to become an Associate. Every application for Associate shall be considered by the Council who shall have power to accept or reject any application.
Such Associates shall have no right to vote at meetings of the Association but shall have the right to receive notice of and attend and speak at such meetings as the Council shall in their absolute discretion decide.

Affiliate Members
Persons who are employed in a scientific capacity whether in laboratories which undertakes testing in the areas which Public Analyst laboratories operate such as food, feedingstuffs, fertilisers, water, etc though other fields will be considered.
They should generally be qualified to degree level or higher in science and have numbers of years practical laboratory experience and still be a practising analyst. Persons with lower qualifications will be considered but require to be able to demonstrate a substantive practical knowledge at high enough level.
If for any reason whatsoever an Affiliate ceases to be so employed, then at the expiration of one month thereafter they shall cease to be an Affiliate Member of the Association.
Every candidate for Affiliate must be nominated by a Member and certified by them to be a fit and proper person to become an Affiliate. Every application for Affiliate shall be considered by the Council who shall have power to accept or reject any application.
Such Affiliates shall have no right to attend meetings of the Association.
Applications for Affiliate membership should be made on the same form as for Associate membership.
Applicants for all grades of membership are required to note the contents of the Memorandum and Articles of the Association
