“Sensational” PA Women in Science!
On Monday, 9th March, Jane Couper and Elaine Miller (Dundee Scientific Services) will be playing their part in helping to raise awareness of women’s achievements in science, technology, engineering and maths while also raising awareness of the important place that public analysts have in public health and safety.
Jane and Elaine will be at Sensation, Dundee’s science centre, taking part in a programme of activities aimed at early secondary school pupils as part of National Science and Engineering Week 2009.
Their engaging display will incorporate many examples of food complaints and other aspects of the work of the public analyst. The centrepiece will be a typical Scottish “alternative school meal” (chips and cheese), together with bowls and vials containing salt, sugar and fat – all serving to illustrate the unhealthier aspects of this lunchtime takeaway favourite.
At the other end of the country Patricia Urwin and a colleague from Bristol Scientific Services will be presenting a practical, interactive workshop at Skirting Science to be held at Wyvern School in Weston-super-Mare. Pat will be looking at nutrition aspects of school meals, problems associated with highly coloured foods, food complaints and, getting away from food, problems with toys. It is expected that this event will be attended by around 300 girls from North Somerset schools.
